His laid back, gap-toothed style and smile apparently extends beyond his music into his personal life, as he candidly offers an invitation at the end of instrumental album closer 'My House By The Water. A mini-album of love songs, Another One is inviting on its own even without DeMarco's potential coffee-cupped company. Like previous albums, you get the feeling here that you already know him anyway Showing us his softer side, DeMarco explores the universal theme of love across a brief twenty-three minutes as endearingly and languidly as only he knows how.
Everything about 'No Other Heart' is sweet. The melody, vocals and sentiment work together to make it a standout on the album, and easily one of his best songs: " The melody's repetitiveness compliments the literal motion - and e motion that he bitterly inserts after each verse: "Pickin' me up just to put me down. On title track "Another One," DeMarco sings "Must be another one she loves" in an oh-well fashion, but the nonchalance shouldn't be mistaken for sloppiness.
He's taken his brand of slacker rock down a notch on Another One - it's downbeat, but not depressing. He doesn't care about tightly tuned guitars or perfectly produced jams. His music is delivered with a lazy eye that's focused on feeling things out and letting them develop. Slight in both scope and feel due to its mini-ness, it literally is just "Another One" in his discography, yet it's Mac DeMarco through and through.
It's just another reason to be content while we wait for the next proper full length.
Just to Put Me Down
This one's still pretty decent. Definitely a must if you're a fan. I met a lot of cool people and a lot of really nervous people.
It was interesting. I grew up on all those guys and it was a good base for me. I mean James, I missed when I was younger, so the last couple years I got a little more into his stuff. I think they kinda get passed off as not being great musicians or guitar players because they play acoustic, but James and Paul [Simon] are actually insane guitar players. In fact, a lot of their music is really intricate. A lot of the chord changes and harmonies are unbelievable. Nowadays, though, I pretty much just listen to weird ambient music or horror movie soundtracks. It can be different. Just recently, I think because I had stuff like James Taylor and Paul Simon in my head, I wanted to sit down and write songs on my acoustic guitar.
But in the past, I had a riff or some kind of beat or something going on and kind of built around that. Sometimes lyrics come early, sometimes they come late.
Yeah, it is. A lot of the record is about my dad, my family…and different relationships.

Back in the day, when I had maybe two videos out there, I did everything on my own. From playing, to recording and mixing, so it felt better to do the videos myself with a couple friends.

It made it so it was more in tune with what I was doing overall; we would just walk out of the house and make it happen. Well, the record I did out there, Another One , I wrote a lot of in the winter.
